OBITUARY MASTER INDEX
This index contains names of individuals who lived in Osage County for a period of time. The obits were collected by individuals of our society and were found in family records, newspapers, and funeral cards. The amount of information ranges from the few lines of a death notice to full, flowery obituaries.
The index consists of over 52,000 names. Some may seem to be duplications but are not because we chose to list them in ways that make them as accessible as possible to researchers. This is our criteria:
- Men are listed by surname; first name, second name or initials, nickname (if any); title (if any); father of (for a child’s death).
- Women are listed by each of their known surnames (maiden, married, etc.); first name, second name, nickname (if any); mother of (for a child’s death). Thus, women may be listed under many surnames. They are listed “Miss” only when that title is noted or obvious. Women under eighteen years are considered children and no title is used.
- Children are listed by surname; first name, second name and nickname, if known. Unnamed children are listed as “child of”, “son of” or “dau of”.
As stated previously, this is an extremely large file so we have tried to make it as user-friendly as possible. Following the name of the deceased the searcher will find the volume and page number of the location of the obit. These must be submitted with the request. Occasionally, DIG or DIG (numeral) will be seen and must also be submitted.
